Fatigue in Materials

What is FATIMAT ?

FATIMAT stands for "FATigue In MATerials".

FATIMAT is supported by KaHo Sint-Lieven as a ‘PWO project’ (PWO is a Flemish abbreviation that stands for 'Projectmatig wetenschappelijk onderzoek' , or 'practically oriented research').

Because there is an ever increasing need for lighter, stronger and cheaper products designers need to be more and more concerned about the fatigue properties of their products. With the arrival of high precision electromechanical actuators and servopneumatic valves, it is possible for small and medium-sized companies to conduct fatigue and durability testing with these cheaper alternatives to servohydraulic fatigue testing machines.

The project concentrates mainly on the issues of fatigue TESTING and less on the actual fatigue properties of products and materials.

Goals of the FATIMAT project

"Find out if and how, for fatigue and durability testing on materials and products, electromechanical and servopneumatic fatigue machines can be used instead of servohydraulic machines."

We investigate:

  • actuator
    • price, value-for-money
    • needed accuracy
    • energy consumption/price
    • cost and complexity of maintenance, maintenance intervals
    • upgradability, vendor lock-in
  • control software (eg.: Zwick/Roell testXpert II)
    • usability, stability
    • hardware dependancy
    • possibility for using self-written software with control software
    • Real-time Linux controllers
  • actuator-controlling hardware
    • data acquisition speed
    • controller type and controller speed
    • overheating problems
    • PC-dependancy
  • post-measurement data analysis
    • usefulness of third party software
      • nCode's ICE-flow Glyphworks: test data analysis software
      • R-statistics: open source statistical software
      • National Instruments Labview
      • Modelica, OpenModelica,
    • storing and manipulation of huge datasets
      • using ODBC-connected MySQL database for safe data storage
      • realtime interfacing from aquisition software to database
    • statistical analysis of fatigue data
